San Servolo, Venice

The Venue

Located in the water off Piazza San Marco, the island of San Servolo offers a unique and enchanting way to enjoy Venice. An eight-minutes vaporetto ride across a breathtaking lagoon connects San Servolo to Piazza San Marco.

San Servolo Island hosts one of the most beautiful and luxuriant garden of Venezia. The San Servolo Café, a restaurant and a multifunction sports field are among the amenities offered to the guests.

The island is a venue for exhibitions of the Art Biennale, congresses and cultural festivals.

The Story

The Island of San Servolo consists of a large architectural complex surrounded by a lovely park. In the seventeenth century the Island hosted Benedictine, Dominican and Franciscan nuns from the island of Candia. Later it became a shelter for the many injured who fled the clashes with the Turks. Medical assistance to the injured was provided by the Padri Ospedalieri of San Giovanni di Dio, today known as Fatebenefratelli.

Since then, the history of San Servolo has been closely linked to the cure of patients with disabling diseases, in particular mental disorders. In the 90s, the City of Venice started an architectural restoration program to protect and promote San Servolo as a center for national and international cultural events. Today, San Servolo serves also as a residential and study center affiliated to several academic organizations.
